{"id":1223,"date":"2026-09-08T13:45:27","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T21:45:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/?p=1223"},"modified":"2026-09-08T13:45:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T21:45:27","slug":"monitor-sounds-from-a-data-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/?p=1223","title":{"rendered":"Monitor Sounds From A Data Center?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent article, &#8220;[t]he complex corporate web behind a \\$3.2 billion AI data center When multiple companies are behind one project, who bears responsibility for problems?&#8221; published by <em>Ars Technica<\/em> at <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/features\/2026\/09\/the-ai-data-center-boom-is-causing-new-accountability-problems\/?utm_brand=arstechnica&amp;utm_social-type=owned&amp;utm_source=mastodon&amp;utm_medium=social\">link<\/a>, intrigued me.\u00a0 There was a reference to a resident living in a house built in 1892 who complained of the constant noise from the new data center.\u00a0 Her complaint followed a previous complaint, so the sound was causing her to file a 2nd complaint\u00a0 I determined where the complainant lived and where the data center was and concluded she lived 2.464 miles as the crow flies.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1225\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1225\" style=\"width: 692px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1225\" src=\"https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260907_103811_Mon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"692\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260907_103811_Mon.png 1216w, https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260907_103811_Mon-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260907_103811_Mon-768x541.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 692px) 100vw, 692px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Somerset, New York: Lake Mariner Data Center Noise Map<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That concerned me.\u00a0 She wasn&#8217;t living 300 feet across a street.\u00a0 And the data center was only \\$3.2 billion, whereas the proposed Google\/Verrus project is \\$5.1 billion.\u00a0 So I created a map for Salem, OR, where one can draw a red circle of a specified radius and locate the center point to see what neighborhoods lie within a 2.464 circle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1235 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260907_111858_Mon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"942\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260907_111858_Mon.png 1270w, https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260907_111858_Mon-300x171.png 300w, https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/20260907_111858_Mon-768x438.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 942px) 100vw, 942px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>OK, so there are all kinds of variables here: topology, what sounds were reaching this lady&#8217;s home, are there generators at the data site possibly creating the sounds?\u00a0 It&#8217;s very clear there is little factual information.\u00a0 I was a litigator.\u00a0 I like facts.<\/p>\n<p>In my aircraft sound monitoring project where I record the decibels aircraft generate over our property caused me to purchase a Reed Instruments R8080 decibel recorder, it is rated Class II for accuracy, meaning it might be 1-2 decibels off of a Class I &#8212; the highest rated recorder deemed acceptable by the Federal Aviation Administration, aka &#8220;FAA&#8221;.\u00a0 I use the R8080 to verify that the decibel chip, an <a href=\"https:\/\/pcbartists.com\/product\/i2c-decibel-sound-level-meter-module\/\">I2C Decibel Sound Level Meter Module,<\/a> I am using for logging the decibels every second (and every 200 milliseconds when the decibels exceed 65). Being 1-2 decibels off of what may be a theoretical decibel is close enough.\u00a0 So I asked ChatGPT about how I could use the R8080 to measure sounds emanating from existing data centers in nearby Hillsboro, OR.\u00a0 Hillsboro has 18 data centers.\u00a0 That&#8217;s when I learned that my R8080 only measures down to 20 Hz<span id='easy-footnote-1-1223' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/?p=1223#easy-footnote-bottom-1-1223' title='20 Hz = 20 cycles per second.\u00a0 So 10 Hz is 10 cycles per second.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 The range of frequencies below 20 Hz is referred to as <strong>Low frequency infrasound waves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Frequencies capable of being heard by humans are called <a id=\"mwATo\" title=\"Audio frequency\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Audio_frequency\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\"><i id=\"mwATs\">audio<\/i> or <i id=\"mwATw\">audible<\/i> <i id=\"mwAT0\">frequencies<\/i><\/a>, the range of which is typically considered to be between 20<span id=\"mwAT4\">\u00a0<\/span><a id=\"mwAT8\" title=\"Hertz\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hertz\" rel=\"mw:WikiLink\">Hz<\/a> and 20,000<span id=\"mwAUA\">\u00a0<\/span>Hz.<span id='easy-footnote-2-1223' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/?p=1223#easy-footnote-bottom-2-1223' title='https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perception#Sound.'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My feeling is: if I am going to go to the trouble of measuring something, then let&#8217;s measure the entire enchilada. I&#8217;ve been reading that there are lawsuits about data centers and their infrasound wave emissions.\u00a0\u00a0My wife told me she was trying to locate a National Institutes of Health, aka &#8220;NIH&#8221;, article about Low frequency infrasound waves and their effects on the human body and she determined the page removed.\u00a0 \u00a0I was able to locate a copy of what I think she was searching for:\u00a0 &#8220;Health effects from low-frequency noise and infrasound in the general population: is it time to listen? A systematic review of observational studies.&#8221;<span id='easy-footnote-3-1223' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/?p=1223#easy-footnote-bottom-3-1223' title='Baliatsas, C., Kamp, I. van, Poll, R. van, Yzermans, J. &lt;strong&gt;Health effects from low-frequency noise and infrasound in the general population: is it time to listen? A systematic review of observational studies.&lt;\/strong&gt;\u00a0Science of the Total Environment: 2016, 557, p. 163-169.'><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I then asked ChatGPT what could I do from a do-it-yourself approach to cover the shortfall of the R8080?\u00a0 I&#8217;m certain that purchases such a device probably runs well over \\$1,000.\u00a0 It came back with a credible plan to build a measuring device for less than \\$100.\u00a0 The heart of the device is the \\$40 Sensiron <a href=\"https:\/\/sensirion.com\/products\/catalog\/SDP810-125Pa\">SDP810-125Pa<\/a> which is a differential pressure sensor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1224\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1224\" style=\"width: 1448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1224\" src=\"https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ChatGPT-Image-Sep-8-2026-11_29_48-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1448\" height=\"1086\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ChatGPT-Image-Sep-8-2026-11_29_48-AM.png 1448w, https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ChatGPT-Image-Sep-8-2026-11_29_48-AM-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/salemdata.net\/johnpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ChatGPT-Image-Sep-8-2026-11_29_48-AM-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1448px) 100vw, 1448px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1224\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A DIY Low Frequency Meausing Device Created by ChatGPT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The above visualization looks feasible, though I have concern about the wind-reduction component.\u00a0 Note: the pressure sensor plus bottle\/baffle assembly depicted above is not yet a calibrated infrasound instrument, it&#8217;s just a visualization of a concept experiment.\u00a0 At what point do the foam baffles curtail the sound your trying to measure vs. the wind?\u00a0 That opened another can of worms?\u00a0 How do I know the wind baffle is capturing the sounds in the range I might hope to track, e.g. 1 Hz &#8211; 20 Hz?\u00a0 Well, that lead into a design discussion of an infrasound generator, i.e. a low-frequency pressure source &#8212; again, something that looks feasible.<\/p>\n<p>I asked ChatGPT to provide me a sample set of data that might be accumulate and just how would that be transformed into something meaningful.\u00a0 It obliged responded:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Yes. For a first version, I would store raw time-series samples, not just processed \u201cdB\u201d values.<\/p>\n<p>If the ESP32 samples at 100 Hz, each row represents 0.01 second. That is the instantaneous differential pressure measured by the sensor.<\/p>\n<p>The values above are fabricated just to illustrate structure.
