The cottage is within the Court Street Chemeketa Street Residential Historic District (<a href=\"http:\/\/salemdata.us\/Salem\/CourtStChemeketSt_Residential_NominationForm_with_photos.pdf\">nominated<\/a>  and accepted  in 1987 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/nationalregister\/index.htm\">National Register of Historic Places<\/a> maintained by the U.S. National Park Service).  The property was home to Willamette College&#8217;s football coach, George Sweetland, in 1911-23 and then to Morton &amp; Jessie Peck 1923-73.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonencyclopedia.org\/articles\/peck_morton_1871_1959_\/\">Morton Peck <\/a>was Oregon&#8217;s foremost botanist.  He wrote the definitive <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manual_of_the_Higher_Plants_of_Oregon\"><em>Manual of the Higher Plants of Oregon<\/em>.<\/a>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/salemdata.us\/Salem\/CourtStChemeketSt_Residential_NominationForm_with_photos.pdf\">Nomination Form <\/a>states &#8220;[t]he Pecks are said to have maintained a beautiful garden on the property.&#8221;  The property was used as a rental from 1973 until 2017, the gardens were destroyed and the cottage neglected and abused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I prefer gardening over football, so the main front lawn, or what&#8217;s left of it after plantings, is known as the Sweetland Plain.
